About half a millennium ago, it is said, the gold – dust-coated new cacique (indigenous tribal head), would venture out into this 20 hectares circular lake in his ceremonial raft made of rushes and dive into the waters washing off the gold. Afterward, jewelry and other precious offerings were thrown into the lake by worshipers standing by.
